Custom CNC Machined Heat Sinks for 5G Base Station Equipment

In early 2026, a leading telecommunications equipment manufacturer contacted us to produce 2,000 custom aluminum heat sinks for their next-generation 5G base station units. The parts were required within 3 weeks to meet their production schedule, with a flatness requirement of ≤ 0.03mm for optimal heat transfer.

Client Challenges

The client had previously sourced these heat sinks from another supplier who couldn’t meet the flatness requirement and was behind on delivery. The client needed to find a new supplier quickly to avoid delaying their product launch.

Our Solution

After reviewing the design, we recommended a small change to the fin spacing, improving both machinability and heat dissipation, which the client approved. We used 6061-T6 aluminum extrusion already in stock to save time on material procurement.

To achieve the required flatness, we employed a face milling process with multiple light cuts after the extrusion. We then conducted a stress relief step to prevent warping post-machining. Every heat sink was checked for flatness using our optical comparator before packing.

Final Result

We delivered 2,000 parts in just 12 working days, well ahead of the client’s 3-week deadline. Upon inspection, 99.8% of the heat sinks met the flatness requirement, far surpassing the performance of their previous supplier. The client has since moved all their heat sink production to PFT World and placed repeat orders for additional batches.
